Why Pompeii?Paintings from antiquity rarely survive—paint,after all, is usually a significantly less long lasting medium than stone or bronze sculpture. However it is thanks to the historic Roman metropolis of Pompeii that we can trace the record of Roman wall painting. All the city was buried in volcanic ash in seventy nine C.E. once the volcano
